As WWE’s flagship event, WrestleMania, continues to break records and push the boundaries of professional wrestling, one man who has been a part of its storied history for nearly four decades is Tito Santana. With an illustrious career spanning over three decades, Santana has experienced his fair share of triumphs and tribulations, but none more so than being one of the select few to have appeared on the first nine WrestleManias alongside the Hulkster himself, Hulk Hogan.
Speaking on a recent episode of the In The Front Row podcast, Santana shared an intimate look at the early days of WrestleMania and the weight of responsibility that came with being part of the event’s inaugural match. “It was a lot of pressure, you know, being one of the first guys to step out there and set the tone for the entire event,” Santana explained. “I remember feeling like it was a big deal, not just for me, but for the entire company. We were all in this together, trying to make something special happen.”
According to Santana, the experience of opening the first WrestleMania was a baptism by fire, with the weight of expectation resting heavily on his shoulders. As one of the most recognizable names in professional wrestling at the time, Hogan was the natural choice to headline the event, but Santana’s role as his partner was far from guaranteed.
“I remember talking to [Vince] McMahon before the match, and he’s telling me how big this is, how it’s going to change the face of professional wrestling,” Santana recalled. “I’m thinking to myself, ‘Okay, this is a big deal, but I’m still just a guy from El Paso, Texas.’ I didn’t know if I belonged in this situation, but I knew I had to make it work.”
Despite the pressure, Santana’s performance alongside Hogan in the inaugural match against King Kong Bundy and Lord Littlebrook set the tone for what would become one of the most iconic events in professional wrestling history. “It was a surreal experience, to say the least,” Santana said. “But looking back, I realize how much of an honor it was to be a part of something so special. We were pioneers, in a way, helping to pave the way for all the great matches and moments that would come after us.”
Over the years, Santana’s contributions to WrestleMania have often been overshadowed by the likes of Hogan, Andre the Giant, and Ric Flair, but his impact on the event cannot be overstated. As one of the few men to have appeared on multiple WrestleManias, Santana’s legacy serves as a testament to his enduring dedication to the sport.
Santana’s reflections on WrestleMania’s early days offer a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes machinations that helped shape the event into what it is today. As WWE continues to push the boundaries of professional wrestling, Santana’s experiences serve as a reminder of the hard work and dedication that went into creating the spectacle we know and love.
When asked about the current state of WWE, Santana remained optimistic about the future of professional wrestling. “I think there’s a lot of great talent coming up, and I’m excited to see what the future holds,” Santana said. “As long as they continue to push the boundaries and innovate, I think the sport will continue to thrive.”
With WrestleMania 38 fast approaching, the WWE universe is abuzz with excitement, and Santana’s words serve as a reminder of the rich history that has come before us. As the world’s premier professional wrestling event continues to evolve, the legacy of Tito Santana and his fellow pioneers serves as a beacon of inspiration for all who aspire to follow in their footsteps.
