The Chennai Super Kings have signed young Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is out for the rest of IPL 2025 due to an elbow injury. Ruturaj had led CSK in the first five matches before getting injured. In their most recent match against KKR on April 11, MS Dhoni took over as captain.
This is a big opportunity for 18-year-old Mhatre. He made his first-class debut for Mumbai at just 17 and soon scored a huge 176 in a Ranji Trophy match. He also became the youngest player to score 150+ runs in men’s List A cricket, beating Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record.
Mhatre has played 9 first-class matches, scoring 504 runs at an average of 31.50. In List A cricket, he’s scored 458 runs in 7 games, with an impressive average of 65.42 and a strike rate of 135.50. He has two centuries and one fifty in both formats.

Even though he went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega-auction in Jeddah with a base price of ₹30 lakh, CSK brought him in after holding trials. Other players like Urvil Patel, Salman Nizar, and Prithvi Shaw were also considered, but the team chose Mhatre.
A CSK source told Cricbuzz that “He will join the squad in Mumbai in a couple of days.” Though the team wants him to join as soon as possible, he’ll need a little more time before linking up with the squad.
This is a huge step in Mhatre’s young career and a chance to shine in yellow.
