Despite failing in his Money in the Bank cash-in attempt, Austin Theory has reinvented himself with a more serious and ruthless persona, dropping his previous ‘selfie’ gimmick. He went on to capture the United States Championship and most recently retained it in a six-man Elimination Chamber match.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Theory is viewed as a “major project” for a significant push in WWE. This is reportedly why he has been slated to face the legendary John Cena at WrestleMania Hollywood this year.

It remains to be seen how Theory will fare against the 16-time World Champion, but this high-profile match indicates that WWE is invested in pushing Theory as a major player in the company’s future.

”Austin Theory vs. John Cena for the U.S. title. Theory is clearly a major project to be a top guy for a long time.”
